Tbe berthing of a big ocean liner is not always a simple matter, and in the majority of oases the services of a tug 'could hardly be dispensed with from the time the steamer comes through the moles into the inner harbour. A rone is passed to the tug from the bQWS of the steamer, and by pulling upon it the Bteamer is assisted to turn round so a* to lie bow to Bea at the wharf. Without the tug, as » general rule thor* would not be room enough fox the steamer to turn. Yesterday morning, however, the big steamer Whakarua, a modern twin-sorew cargo boat, made quite a display in entering tho harbour. She came through the moles at • good speed, and, far from needing the tug to pull her b<?ws round, awung round about half-way into her berthing position before the Canterbury got a pull on the rope at aIL An Australian shipping journal stated recently that it was reported from Perth that the directors of the P. and l O. Company had decided l to instal wireless telegraph apparatus on their vessels engaged: in the Australian mail service, and that the Marmora would bo fitted up first with the Marconi apparatus.
