CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

There can be no question as to tlio excellence of the work that Mr G. W. Russell is doing for Canterbury College and the affiliated institutions. The College itsolf whs never more popular than it is to-day, and the Board of Governors, following the lead of its able chairman, is making it in every respect the worthy centre of the educational life of the province. Great institutions of the kind in all parts of the world look to patriotic citizens for assistance and support, but by a curious fatality it has never fallen to tho lot- of Canterbury College to participate in private benefactions. And yet there is ,no institution in the province more worthy of help. At the present time Mr Russell is considering ways and means of providing accommodation for tho rapidly increasing number of students. Ho proposes to go to tho Government with a request for £20,000, in order to build and equip a physical laboratory, to build a suitable library for the College, and to provide nowarid large lecture theatres. Later in the year tho Board will be asked to consider the question of establishing a modest School of Music, so that there may be a recognised local authority to grant the certificates and diplomas for which examinations aro now held by London associations. Wo shall have other opportunities of discussing these important proposals. A good deal of Mr Russell’s address yesterday was neceasarily devoted to the question of finance, and the public who follow the affairs of the College at all closely must be impressed by the businesslike manner in which the finances are managed. The chairman is anxious to obtain the maximum return from the various endowments, and a careful supervision is maintained over all accounts. Mr Russell must have saved the various institutions many thousands of pounds since he was appointed chairman of the Board, and it is only Tight that tho public should recognise and acknowledge the great services he has rondcred them in this respect.
