SATURDAY’S MATCHES POSTPONED. Saturday was to have been the opening day of the Canterbury Rugby Union’s competitions, but the incessant rain caused a postponement of all matches. This was hailed with satisfaction by most of the players, because it was certain that, even if the weather had cleared on Saturday morning, the f rounds would have been soaked by 'riday’s rain, and in the circumstances good play would have been out of the question. WELLINGTON FOOTBALL. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON. April 25. The Rugby Union’s competitions opened on Saturday.. The following are the Senior results:—Athlete 13 beat Oriental 7, Melrose 8 beat Wellington 3, Ponoke 46 beat Southern 0, St James 24 bent Victoria College 4, Petone 23 beat Old Boys 15. [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, April 24. Owing to heavy showers the commencement of tho Rugby football season baa been postponed for a week. Taumarunui footballers have decided to play their matches on Sundays throughout the coming season, according to a country journal. For more than one summer cricket matches have beon played at Taihapo on Sundays.
