Constable H. Scott, who is being transferred to Gisborne, was on Saturday presented with a gold-mounted fountain pen and a silver cigarette case as a token of esteem from his comrades at the Christchurch police station. Mr A. V. Snaddon, accountant at the Union Bank at Ashburton, left ou Friday for Welliugtou, having been transferred on promotion. Mr W. R. Tomlinson, of Waimate, will fill the vacancy at AshburtonAmong the arrivals in Christchurch yesterday were Messrs A. P. Fry and A. Gurker (Colorado), J. Buckle (Oamaru), F. Gawth (Alton), T. C. Coull, A. Johnston, F. J, Callaghan, C. A. Richardson and F. M. Short (Dunedin) and G. G. Holmes and J. A. H. Holmes (Holmes’s Bay). Mr Nelson Illingworth, the sculptor, is on a visit to Christchurch; He is still engaged on his work in connection with representations of typical members of the Maori race, and intends to visit the Bay of Islands district soon to get fresh models. Mr and Mrs Jonathan Barrett, who have lived in Christchurch for thirtyfive years, celebrated their golden wedding on Thursday. They came to New Zealand by the shop Ballochmele on Juno 1, 1874, accompanied by their twelve children. Their descendants now number six sons and ton daughters, eighteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Mr/Barrett was in the employ of the the Linwood Borough Council for upwards of twen-ty-three years. A large number or relations and friends met at a social gathering on Thursday evening, and presented Mr and Mrs Bar’rett with’a purse of sovereigns.
