;r kaiapoi. An ordinary meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough. Council was held on Tuesday evening; present—the Mayor (Mr J. 'H. Blackwell), and Councillors Parnham, Pearce, Hayman, Robb, Keetley, Bugg, Geering and Dr Davies. A number of cases of scarlatina were reported. A letter from Mr C. C. Rovell, complaining that Cambridge Terrace Road had not yet received the promised attention, was referred to the Works Committee. The Mayor was appointed to arrange with a representative to bo present at the hearing of the general labourers’ dispute. A letter was received from the general manager of the Tourist Department, asking the Council for particulars of pleasure spots along the river AVaimakarivi. The Mayor said that the letter was. the result of a. conversation he had with the Hon T. Mackenzie some little time ago. The clerk was requested to send information to the Department. The Lighting Committee reported .that the .returns fob.the first six months of the gas supply were satisfactory. There was a. credit balance of £B9 Gs Od on the gas account. The price of the gas had been reduced by sixpence per IGQIt. The connections, in March fiad numbered seventy, and during the current month eighty, and it was ‘confidently expected that the estimate of tko number of connections for twelve months would be realised. The finance report stated that the receipts had been £lO Os, and there was a debit balance of £5Ol Gs Bd. The kerbiug and channelling account was in credit £224 Os Id, and the Council had still to receive the balance of the £2500 loan. Accounts for £lO 5s 5d were passed for payment. ASHBURTON. The Ashburton Borough Council met on Monday evening. The Mayor (Mr H. Davis) reported that the debit balance at the bank was £1353 14s sd, and the revenue since the previous meeting had been £49 14s 2d. The Mayor was appointed to represent the Council at the hearing of the general labourers’ industrial dispute. Two applicants were granted an extension of six months in which to build on reserves leased by them from the Council. The use. of the upper room of the Council Chambers was granted to a St John Ambulance Association’s class. It was decided to place a lamp at the corner of the North-west Bolt and Cox Street, the Upper Ashburton Road Board to pay half the cost of erection and maintenance. The Sanitary Committee’s report regarding a proposal to allow the scavenger to go outside the limits of the borough was referred back to the committee. The clerk reported that there had been one death from tuberculosis in the borough since the previous meeting, and. that permits for the erection of buildings at a total cost of £BOO, had been granted. The inspector reported that the sanitary condition_ of the borough was satisfactory. Licenses to sell meat were granted to the following:— Messrs J. H. Rule, E. J. Cox, (J. James, "VV. H. Robinson, W. J. Silcock, Jeffs and Frost, J. E. Thomas and A. Young; to sell milk, Messrs J. Olsen, A. Shaw, J. Hunt; public entertainment, Mr J. E. Jones. The following tenders for Domain paddocks were accepted Numbers Sand 6, Mr J. Newman; No. 4, Mr J. J. Lewis.
