FAREWELLING A MAGISTRATE

LAW SOCIETY AND MR Y. G. DAY. Yesterday afternoon tho Christchurch members of the Canterbury Law Society met at tho Magistrate’s Court to say good-bye to Mr V. G. Day, S.M., who lias been transferred to the Timaru district. Mr H. J. Beswick, president of the Society, in a brief speech said farewell to Mr Day on behalf of the profession in Christchurch. He said that though Mr Day had only been stationed in Christchurch about four years he bad been in the district long enough to make the profession feel keenly the fact that he was leaving tho city. It had always been a pleasure to do business in any Court over which Mr Day had presided, and during his term as second Magistrate he (Mr Beswick) had heard nothing that could load anyone to believe that any member of tho profession or any litigant had been dissatisfied with tho treatment received at Mr Day’s hands. It was with great regret that they said good-bye to Mr Day, and on behalf of the profession he "hoped that it would not be long bofore he would occupy a seat on a Bench in one of the four centres. In replying, Mr Day said that though ho was going to Timaru ho would not ho cut off entirely from the Christchurch members of tho Society, some of whom went to Ashburton and Rakaia, where ho would be sitting. He had come to Christchurch a stranger, but he was received most cordially from the start, and during the whole time his relations with the profession had been most amicable and friendly. The news of his transfer had been a blow to him, and against his wishes. He had done all he could to induce the Government to allow him to remain in Christchurch, but it had been unable to alter its arrangements. During the four years he had been, in Christchurch, he flattered himself that there had not been a harsh word' between himself and the profession ; they had had their differences of opinion—they would not have been human if they had not.
