WIDENING THE AVON. THE BOWING ASSOCIATION’S WORK. The Floral Fete trustees recently voted a. substantial sum for the improvement of the Avon and the straightening of the corners over the mile course. The Canterbury Rowing Association has the administration of' the fund in hand .and work was commenced yesterday at Cowlishaw’a Corner, where a very considerable portion of the bank is being removed. The corner was always an awkward one at rowing contests, and the straightening work will very much improve the place in the future for racing. The work at this point is the most important that will be undertaken, but lesser and needed improvements will be effected at other places in the river. Eight men and teams are employed on the work, which will take some weeks to complete. The improvements are under the supervision of Mr Tomlinson, for the Drainage Board, and of Mr F. D. Kesteven, for the Floral Fete trustees.
