As the Maraxoa will be laid up for come days, the Union Company has had to make other arrangements to maintain the ferry service. The Waikaro will leave Wellington at 8 o’clock to-night, after connecting with the northern express train. The Msheno, leaving Lyttelton to-morrow evening, wil] await the arrival of tho first express from Dunedin, in older to take southern passengers 'and mails on to Wellington. The Pateena is to leave Wellington on Thursday night for Lyttelton, and will maintain tho running until tho Mararoa is ready for sea again.

The Westport Coal Company’s steamer Canopus arrived yesterday afternoon, alter a quick run of 32 hours from Westport. The vessel has a full cargo of coal to land here. The Komata arrived last night with a load of coal from Westport. The Cygnot made a special trip to Akaroa on Sunday, and did not return until last night. The vessel will sail to-night for Kait koura and Wellington. Tho barquentine Volador sailed out from the stream on Sunday morning, with a fair wind. The vessel is bound to Greymouth, where she will load white pine for Sydney. ■ Owing to the mishap to her thrust shaft, the Mararoa did not leave la3t night for Wellington. Shipping matters were extremely quiet in port yesterday. The contrast to the busy days of last week was most markI ed.>... The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's steamer Jtotea left Liverpool on Miaroh 21 for Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton' and Port Chalmers. The vessel, which is due at Auckland on May 29, has 3400 tons of cargo for New Zealand ports, .500 tons being for Lyttelton. • The barque Cambusdoon, whioh put into Lyttelton in distress last week, was surveyed yesterday morning by Messrs H. K, Ashton purveyor to Lloyd’s Register), J. J. Kinsey Lloyd’s agent), and C. Ferrier (representing ha master and owners of the ship). After «. consultation it was decided that the ship (hoijld be berthed thiß morning. A reporter was informed that tho vessel was not damaged. Some of the cargo will have to be shifted and restowed, in order to “ trim " (the ship, which at present is loaded “by the head.” Of the 700 wooden brigs and brigantines iwned in the United States thirty-eight years igo, there are but eleven left at the present lime, and many of these are nearly ready to inter the breakers’ yards. Tho oldest brig afloat is the Sullivan, 344 tons gross, built in 1866, and ■ the youngest, tho Geneva, in 1892. The total tonnage of tho eleven is but 3756 tons, or not much more than that of one modern wind-jammer. Of the eleven mx are on tho Pacific Coast—the Geneva, Lurline, Galilee, W. G. Irwin, Harriet G. and Blakely. The other five—the Motley, Daisy, Sullivan, Pitcairn and Frederick Schepp—are on tho Atlantic.

THE ULIMARO3L The Ulimaroa is expected to come out of dock in a week. The repairing of the damage caused by her grounding in Otago Harbour has been carried out by Messrs Anderson Limited in exoollent time, and as far as laymen’s eyes can tell, in excellent fashion, and the vessel seems to be as fit for work as ever. The principal work remaining fo be done consists in painting, but her bunker ooal, discharged at the dockside to enable tho floors to be got at, will have to be reloaded. The Riverina is to come to Wellington from Sydney, but if the arrangements for the Ulimaroa hold good, she will be met there by the Ulimaroa, and will return to Australia, the Ulimaroa continuing her run southward and to Melbourne.
