Wheat.—The wheat market is weak and inactive, owing to the continuance of heavy shipments from America and the River Plate. Buyers are disinclined to operate with a prospect for still lower prices. There is little inquiry for cargoes; old Australian afloat is offering at 38s to 396 per quarter; new, loading, at 38s; steamer parcels afloat, at 375; Australian spot has slumped to 40s; New Zealand is nominally 38s to 40s for long-beiried and 37s to 38s for shortberried. The American visible supply is 63,890,000 bushels. Flour is flat, owing to excessive supplies, and has declined from 6d to Is, Australian retailing at 28s 6d to 30s. Butter. —The butter market is firm; colonial is unchanged and Danish has been raised 10 kroner, making the London quotation about 1535. . Copra.—The market is weak, but fair business is doing in South Sea in bags at £l7 per ton; for bulk £l6 15s is offered. Copper.—On spot, £59 per ton. Tin.—ThTee months', £129 10s per ton. MISCELLANEOUS. Hemp.—The market is firm but flat; February-March shipments £27 10s per ton. SYDNEY WOOL SALES. (Received February 18, 1 a.m.) SYDNEY, February 17. At the wool sales there was keen competition and prices were well maintained. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 17. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable message from the High Commissioner, dated London, February 15:— Frozen Meat.—Mutton —The market is dull; Canterbury is very 6carce at 4Jd nominal: Southland brands, 3|d; North Island, 3Jd; Australian, 2|d; River Plate, 3d. Lamb—The market is a shade weaker, but there is a fair demand. The following are current quotations:—Canterbury lamb, s|d to (id; other than Canterbury, 5Jd to s£d ; Australian, 4Jd. Beef—There haa been no alteration in the beef market since last week. The following are the shipments from the River Plate during the month of January:—Mutton London, 92,309 carcases; Liverpool, 111,363; Hull 13,892;. Newcastle, 4000; Cardiff, 420; Southampton, 1300. Lamb—London, 6960 carcases; Liverpool, 9841; Hull, 987; Newcastle, 200; Cardiff, nil; Southampton. 141. Butter for the various ports, 11,542 cwt. Butter.—There is a further general advance in the butter market; New Zealand is quoted at 150 s; Danish, lols; Australian, 148 s; Siberian, 1445. Cheese.—The market is quiet but firm; white makes are quoted at 61s 6d and coloured at 62s 6d. Hemp.—The market is weak.
