BOXING.

CANTERBURY AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. ‘ Last evening at the Theatre Royal the Canterbury Boxing Association conducted the opening rounds of the annual Canterbury amateur championships. Tli© attendance, was very large. Good entries had been received, and by a careful selection the committee ensured that th© performers would h© fairly matched so that novices would not enter the ring against experienced boxers. Th© evening’s ©vents were tho first rounds of the bantam, feather and light-weight championships, in each of which two bouts were decided, and one of the heavy-weight championship.' Tho bouts consisted of three rounds, each of three _ minutes' duration. D. Nelligan (Christchurch) and W. M. Campbell (Dunedin) boxed an interesting bout in tho bantamweight event. Nelligan was the more successful defensive boxer, while Campbell forced the pace to his own disadvantage., Nelligan showed to the most advantage in the first round, and, maintaining his lead, won a popular victory. Parker and Denham, both of Christchurch, were not so evenly matched. In the first round Denham was the cleverer, but in the third Parker punished him severely, and the referee declared Parker the winner before the round was finished. Tresize (Christchurch) and Johnson, (Dunedin) met in the feather-weight ©vent. Tresize, with the advantage of weight, height and reach, wae the more aggressive, leading very cleanly and effectively, and in the middle of the second round his opponent was counted out. Gould (Timaru) met Blackler, of Lyttelton, and gave a clever exhibition of footwork and evasive tactics. Bladder received punishment in the second round, and tho referee declared Gould th© winner. Wright and Salt provided an amusing bout of on© round in the light-weight championship. Salt forced the pace at once, and should have decided th© event in the first minute. Wright rallied, however, after being roughly handled, and Salt having expended his energy in the initial stages was counted out in the first round. Mayzo (Christchurch) had an advantage of 101 b in weight over Godby (Dunedin). Godby did most of the leading, and proved himself a powerful, but erratic hitter. Mayz© boxed in th© most sportsmanlike manner, and x-e----friained from taking advantage of his less experienced opponent. In the third round Godby was down for t-savbxx seconds, and on rising went down again, the referee awaading the bout to Mayzo. ..The heavy-weight bout between Lloyd (Ashburton) and Fitzakerby (Christchurch) was very brief. Lloyd, who was the heavier by five pounds, immediately commenced to score, and in about thirty seconds effected a “ knock-out,” Fitzakerby having failed to make any effective show of opposition. This evening tho finals will be boxed. The bantam-weight event lies between Nelligan and Parker, and J. Beccroft, who had a bye last evening. Tresize and Gould will contest th© featherweight championship, Mayz© and Wright will meet in the light-weight championslup, and Lloyd and Robertson will compete for the heavy-weight championship.
