OBITUARY. MR JOHN HOLMES. Mr John Holmes, who died iat his residence, Wobb Street, on Wednesday afternoon, was a- well-known Christchurcli identity. He had been associated with the dieta-ict for many years, and although latterly he had not been seen in public life, at one time he held a very prominent position in the community. He represented Christchurch South in the House of Representatives from 1881 to 1887, and was « staunch, progressive politician. Mr Holmes was born in Ireland in 1838, but emigrated to Victoria in 1865, whero lor fomo years ho occupied a prominent position as a barrister and subsequently as a Magistrate. In 1878 he decidotl to come to New Zealand, and ho practised in Christchurch as a barrister and solicitor with Mr A. Loughrey, under the style of Holmes and Loughrey. H© was known a« a fearless and reliablo advocate. He was a man of exceptional ability, and whatever ho put his hand to appeared to prospur. In. private life lie was always one of tho most genial and hospitable of men, and ho left behind him many friends who deplore his death. ITo leaves «v wife and one daughter. Mr Holmes owned and occupied the Vicwmont Estate, near Methven, where ho lived in retirement for some yeans, before returning *° to^vn.. The funeral will take place at Methven te-dav. A special train will be run to Methven this morning, leaving Christchurch at 9.15, and returning to town at 6 p.m.
