WELLINGTON NOTES.
[From Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, June 11. W. Webb, the Wanganui oarsman, who is to row C. Towns on the Paramatta next August for tho championship of the world, is to leave Wellington for Sydney on Friday of this week, accompanied by his trainer, J. D. Barnett. He is to be given a send-off at Wanganui to-morrow night by local enthusiasts. A course of instruction. for officers -.holding commissions in companies located throughout the Wellington Vcl] unteer district (Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu and Wellington) will be held in Wellington during August next. The work and duties of every branch of the service will bo dealt with at the school, and invitations to attend have been sent to the officers ,of all branches. Subsequently similar courses will bo hold in Canterbury and Otago. Miss Matilda Monteith appeared as a solicitor at the civil sittings of tho Magistrate’s Court this morning, and had the unique experience of being tho first lady to take a scat at tho Bar in the lower Court in Wellington. Mies Monteith, on asking for an adjournment of a c~se on behalf of Messrs Levvey and Mackenzie, was congratulated by Dr M’Arthur, S.M., on her first appearance at the Bar. Hia Worship said he hoped that they would see Miss Monteith frequently. 'lt is understood that Miss Monteith was admitted as a solicitor at Hokitika.
The city engineer has prepared a scheme for the drainage of the outlying portions of the city, the estimated cost being about £68,000. Tire Mayor says the scheme is well conceived and appears to. be a practicable one, and the cost is less than he anticipated.
