Sixty degrees below aero is the frightfully cold atmosphere experienced in Alaska. Dwellers in that dreary region make fireplace* of snow pressed into blocks like bricks. When the fire is lighted the snow, of course, melte on the surface; but when the fire is out this freezes so hard-that the next fire causes it to become only damp. _ A snow fireplace used only for_ cooking purposes will last an entire winter. \
