Sir, —Mr Verrall is labouring under a delusion when he charges me with laughing at the idea of a State Bank, and obviously he has not followed closely the story _ of tho deputation wh’ch recently waited on the City Council. Any of the Counc Hors can furnish him with the necessary information if he desires it, and in any case the report of the utterance! of one cf the rpeakers which appeared in the daily papers ought to answer the question of “Why does Tommy laugh?” The burning of the notes as described by the deputation would have ruined the text “ He never smiled again” if the grief stricken monarch who supplied it o'-uld have foreseen what was to happen in the G~uncil Chambers -elativo to the conflagration. and if Mr Verrall had clcsoIv followed the course of events he would also be holding Irs aching sides.
