SERIOUS FIRE IN AN AUSTRALIAN TOWNSHIP. United Prce* Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, January 31. A fire destroyed nearly tho whole business part of Kempsey. The remainder of the town was saved by a couple of buildings being burnt to form a gap against tho main conflagration. The damage is estimated at between thirty and forty thousand pounds. The fire started in the “Chronicle” Office. Savage’s large store, which was completely destroyed, was insured for £(3000 in various offices; Tho National had a line of £BOO. [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, January 30. A four-roomed cottage in King Street, Roslyn, was burned down shortly before- midnight. Mrs Hickey, tho occupier of the dwelling, who had been awaiting tho return of her two daughters, left the house to l meet them, and on getting back found the house in flames. It is supposed that during her absence the curtains were blown against a lamp burning in tho kitchen. Nothing was saved. Tho insurances are £75 on the furniture in the Alliance Office, and on the building, owned by Mr R. Fleming, £175 in the Alliance Office, and £125 in the Standard Office. The fire brigades were summoned yesterday morning to a cottage at the corner of Madras and li3'ron Streets, Sydenham, owned by Mrs Buchanan and occupied by Mr A. E. Loach. A fire had been discovered in some clothing., but a few buckets of water sufficed to extinguish it before the arrival of the brigade.
