PUBLIC WORKS ALLOCATIONS

OTAGO’S CLAIMS. - [From Our Corhesi'ondent.l DUNEDIN, November 17. Replying to the “Lyttelton Times’ f of yesterday, the “Star” says:— Dunedin’s notion of politeness or seemliness is not to slight the Premier and his colleagues when they come amongst them, because of dissatisfaction with the allocations of the Public Works Department.. Last Saturday wo observed, “ Sir Joseph Ward is about to visit Dunedin for the first time since his accession to the Pfemiership. The • citizens will be glad to see him. Pleasant things will be said no doubt,- and ; felicitations exchanged.” Thus we anticipated that a cordial welcome would be given to Sir Joseph in this part of the colony, and regarded it as natural and proper. , Yet we were burning with indignation at the wrongs of Otago;'lt is strange that the “ Lyttelton Times,” with its large and national view, should find the two sentiments incompatible. We trust, by the way, that the speeches delivered at the meeting of the Cat-lins-Tahakopa Railway League, on Thursday have caused our contemporary to relinquish, regretfully no doubt, the idea that the Dunedin citizen* have come to the conclusion that “ Mr Ha 11-Jones has made a very fair distribution of the money at his disposal.” It will hardly do to go on pretending that the grievances of Otago are tb* fictitious creations of perverse prammen.
