CRICKET.

DISTRICT COMPETITION,

FIRST GRADE. Cricketers were again favoured on Saturday with splendid weather for the continuance of the first round of grade matches. The wickets were again, in capital order, and some good scores were made. At Hagley Park, West Christchurch, after a very exciting game, just on call of time snatched a two-point win from St Albans, while the Ricoarton-Sydonham match, which was equally exciting, ended in a draw. At Lancaster Park, Linwood maintained the’advantage) secured on the first day and had a comfortable win. WEST CHRISTCHURCH v. ST ALBANS. In the West Christchnrch-St Albans match West Christchurch declared the innings closed with four _ wickets;, down for 386, and as the wicket was in good order this left St Albans with a good, chance of making a draw. This they failed to do by three minutes. St Albans opened with Reese and Carter, and made a first-class start, 38 being on the board when Carter left for a fairly well played 19. He played Malone much better than Lawrence, off whom he was missed twice. Ollivier, in attempting a big lift, played one on. Turner was very uncomfortable when, facing Malone, and was soon bowled. Vincent did not get properly on to a high drive, and was well caught by Wilson in the deep field. Fonr_ wickets were thus down for 62. Frankish then joined Reese, and by hard hitting and plenty of luck managed to put a better aspect on the game from the St Albans point of view. Frankish was eventually well taken at the wickets by Weston. * His innings, though lucky, contained some fine drives. Barrett got in some good strokes before Cook made a well-judged catch in the outfield. Ho was badly missed by Dakin when he had made 11. Allard was shaping well when Dakin accepted a hot one at point. Rees© was enabled to obtain the coveted three figures, and only inst lost the draw by one over. Shortly after, with only one over to go, Reese, in attempting a short run, was run out, and so enabled West Christchurch to get a two-point win. Reese, going in first, had, by splendid defensive play, gradually worked his way into form, and then scored well all round the wicket. WEST CHRISTCHURCH.. First Innings. A. E.
