WAIMATE NOTES.

[From Our Correspondent.] W ATM ATE, October 13. The weather during the past week or eo has been delightful, hut the country |cbuld do with rain. Everything ia looking well, and there is promise of big yields- Reports from all around show that there has been an, excellent percentage.of lambs. The town has received an instalment of its gas lighting, and the , little .oil lamps hitherto in use fade, into insignificance beside the brilliant incandescent t gas. Soon all the streets and business places will be using the new illuminant. The waterworks also are being pushed along. The reservoir is completed, and a start has been made on the reticulation. ■ , . N . i Waimate had a great time preparing for the band contest and during that function. In every way the contest was a success. On garden party day the “ gate,” was £49 18s, and the refrashment stall £l3 11s 6d. Ou the quickstep day.the “gate” was £lßl 13s, and the stall £3B 3s 6d. - Admission to the Drill Hall on Wednesday evening (selection night) amounted to £57 15s 9d, and on the previous day £l3. The Laches’ Entertainment Committee netted nearly £7O by its efforts, a result considered splendid by the Contest Committee. - . . At the Magistrate’s Court, a lengthy case took place wherein an Oamaru firm of produce merchants was sued for £ls 18s for potatoes sold to its agent. The defence was that the potatoes were not up to sample. Evidence was hoard, and the Magistrate reserved his decision. A claim for refund of cash lent by Gallery to Cremdns was settled by defendant agreeing to repay the money in instalments. ’
