CYCLING.

It has been decided, in connection with the hill-climbing championships to be held at tho Cashmere Hills on Thursday afternoon, under the auspices of the Christchurch Cycling and Motor Club, that the first event shall start at 2.30. The competitions are being held under the patronage of tho Canterbury Automobile Association, many of whose members aro taking an active interest in tho promotion of these competitions. Two classes are provided for motor-cars, one for cars of eight horse-power and under, and one for all cars over eight horse-power. With regard to the motor cycle class, it has been decided to allow of only one attempt to ascend the hill, whilst pedalling will bo a ground for disqualification. Several of the Warrnambool to Melbourne competitors have entered for the bicycle championship. A special tram service will be provided to cope with the increased traffic to the hills that afternoon.

A road race held on Tuesday from the Canal Reserve to Styx Bridge and back, resulted in a win for C. Bennetts (4min), with J. Dennis (scr) 2, and T. Robson (scr) 3. Dennis won the special prize for fastest time. The Civil Service Rifles’ road race took place on Saturday from Ricoarton to West Melton and back, a distance ofabout twenty-two miles. The result was;—Private Cook, 2min, 1; Private Campbell, Imin,' 2; Corporal Torry, scr, 3. Campbell secured fastest time, with Cook second and Terry third. The first race in connection with the Marshland Club was run on Friday, over a six and a half mile course. The result was —T. Gorinski, 30seo, 1; L. Philpott, 35min. 2; L. Glasson, 65sec, 3. Time—l9min 4sec. Seventeen started.
