RAILWAY TRAVELLING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Now that the Exhibition is shortly to open, and excursions will be in full swing, I wish to call the atten- ■ tion of the Railway Department to the ’ state of affairs that has existed in the past, especially on excursion train?, that is, the allowing of drunks, 0f,,. mildly speaking, intoxicated persona, the free use of the whole train. Nine out of ten men in that state \ush to the carriages at the last moment, and, the majority get into carriages already ; filled with women and children. It ia needless for me to describe the feelings and thoughts of .the women and children, and, in my opinion, it is high'time such a practice was chocked. In fact, all intoxicated persons ought to be labelled, similar as cases containing liquor are required' to be done, when such person’s destinatioir is a nd-lioense dis- " ? trict. As a remedy, I suggest that intoxicated persons should be prevented from entering any carriage otherwise than a smoking one, where only men are, and then man can deal.with man, whether he be sober or not. Or another, suggestion I would make _ while the/Exhibition is on, as there will be, in all probability, a large number; of this class of people travelling to and from Christchurch, is, that a carriage be set apart for that purpose alone, well-labelled, “ Reserved for drunks only.”-—I am, etc., ■■■('■■ P.. W. FRANCIS.
