Huddari-Parker Company’s s.s. Victoria, has returned to his ship, after passing an examination for his master’s certificate at Sydney. Captain Watson, secretary of the New Zealand branch of the Australasian Merchant Service Guild, will leave Wellington m .Saturday for Sydney. His visit is connection with the dispute between the Guild and the steamshio companies, which will be heard by -the Federal Arbitration Court on November 5. The s.s. Gibraltar, which left Newcastle on Thursday for' New Zealand, is bringing 5000 tons of coal for Lyttelton- and Timaru. The shipping authorities in Melbourne do not attach much importance to the reported rumours that the seamen and firemen on the New Zealand coastal steamers contemplate a general .Strike just before the opening of the Christchurch Exhibition. Mr D, Mills, the Melbourne manager of the. Union Steamship Company of New Zealand, slated that tho cabled paragraph in the "Age" was the first ho had heard of the matter, and he had no reason to believe that there was any intention of striking. The agreement recently made between Australian .shipowners and seamen for' a!10 s ' Increase in wages, to take effect at the end of this year,' is (adds the “Age”) probably responsible for the dissatisfaction among New Zealand seamen, for, as the rates now in force, are identical, the .New Zealanders will next year bo 10s per month behind Australians. The New Zealand rates are," however, fixed by the Arbitration Court, 'and the secretary of the Australian Steamship Owners’ Federation states that the present award, will not expire until. April, IBOS. Consequently, if the seamen "were to strike before that time they would be flouting the Arbitration Court, .and lay themselves open to prosecution. _ ' The New Zealand .Shipping 'Company’s s.s. Waiihate' "left' at' 6.10 p.m. yesterday for Timaru,' Wellington and Auckland, the last of which is to be her port of departure for London.
