CRICKET.

NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. PROPOSED TASMANIAN VISIT. Tho New Zealand Cricket Council met last evening; present—Mcssrs_ T. D. Harman (Manawatu), in the chair, J. Young (Auckland), J. 0. Jameson (South Canterbury), G. Marshall (Hawke’s Bay), A. Hardy (Taranaki), C. Treweck (Wellington), O. Caygill (Nelson), J. C. Clarkson and J. N. Fowke (Canterbury), A. Sima (Westland), G. T. Weston (Wanganui), H. C. Ridley (Auckland), R. Vincent (honorary treasurer) and F. C. Raphael (honorary secretary). Tho secretary stated that Mr F. J. Ohleon’s letter in connection with the treatment accorded to him by. the ,two other New Zealand selectors, Messrs J. Wheatley and J. Baker, had been sent to those gentlemen. Mr Wheatley had written, stating that there had been no intention to show any discourtesy to Mr Oh Ison. "When he and Mr Baker found that Mr Oldson could not visit Christchurch, they wrotp to him, and made every possible endeavour to secure his views as to tho selection, and to give effect to them. Mr Baker had alee written, stating that Mr Ohlson’s inability to visit Christchurch 'had inconvenienced the other selectors very greatly, but they had done all they could to meet his wishes. It was agreed that copies of the letters should be, sent to Mr Ohlson, and that be should be informed that in the opinion of the Council no slight had been intended, but tho trouble over the selection was due solely to his inability to join the other selectors in Christchurch. The committee appointed to consider a scheme of insuring the gate receipts for matches with the proposed English team, reported that tho proposals mad© by an English firm, of underwriters were not such as could be adopted by the Council. The terms proposed were not sufficiently explicit. It was decided that the committee should be asked to make inquiries, with a view to obtaining better terms. A letter was received from the Tasmanian Cricket Association, asking whether the Council would he prepared to receive a visit from a Tasmanian team during the season of 1906-1907. Tho Association wished to know what terms tho Council could offer, and what matches could be arranged to include fixtures in the South Island fand Wellington. Mr Ridley said that the Council could hardly entertain a proposal from a team which would not tour the colony. If Auckland was to be left out of consideration, the Council should refer the Tasmanian Association to those Associations with which it proposed to play. Mr Caygill said that the tour of a visiting team was a * matter for the Council, whether it covered the whole colony or not. Mr Fowke said that a match against the North Island might be played at Wellington. Mr Sims said that it would be well to ascertain whether an English team was ely to visit the colony. It would probably be unwise to get a Tasmanian team, which would be only a secondclass team, if a flrst-claee English team was to tour the colony in the same season. Mr Raphael said that the likelihood of securing an English team depended solely, on Australia. If an English team visited Australia, it would come onto New Zealand. He hoped to hear from England very scon as to the probability of the visit. On the motion of Mr Weston, seconded by Mr Clarkson, it was decided that the letter should be referred to tho committee appointed to negotiate for an English team. A letter was received from the Manawatu Association, thanking the Council for refunding the sum of £lO, part of the guarantee for the match against the Melbourne Cricket Club. An appeal was received from the Athletic Cricket Club (Nelson), through’ the Nelson Association, against the decision of the Nelson Association not to, award a championship trophy for the past season. The club.considered that it was entitled to the championship trophy. ' Messrs Caygill, Sims and Ridley were appointed a committee to consider the appeal, anil report to the Council.
