[From Ora Correspondent.] NELSON, May 14. The' old man, William Hounsell, who cut his throat with a broken scythe, a few days ago, died to-day. TRAM ACCIDENT AT WOOLSTON. A > MAN RUN OVER. The steam tram from Christchurch to Sumner last evening added another to a long list of accidents, fatal and otherwise, on the line. The victim, a carrier named Julius Herman Rosa nowski, Kad one of his feet badly mangled. It is stated that RosanoWski was driving his cart near the Woolston School, when he came into collision with the 6 p.m. through tram from Christchurch. He was thrown out of the cart and the tram crushed his foot. The horec end cart were practically uninjured. Rosanowiski was immediately placed on an electric car that was' travelling to--wards town, and ho was conveyed to the Hospital, where it was found that the injury was severe; and that the lower leg would probably have to be amputated. At a late hour, however, Rosanoweki was not in a condition to be operated upon. Mr Thomas Dent, of Lauriston, whilst cutting wood with a circular saw,' had his thumb severely cut by coming in contact with the saw. Ho was attended by Dr Hunter, of Ashburton. An inquest was hold at the - 'Ashburton Hospital yesterday, befoVe Mi* R. Alcorn, J.P., Acting-coroner, touchingthe death of Josiah Beach. A verdict of death from heart failure was returned. INQUEST. At the Hospital yesterday afternoon, before Mr H. W. Bishop, Coroner, an inquest was held concerning the death of a little girl named Ethel Mackie, who had been run over by a runaway horse and cart, which she had tried to stop at Lower Riccarton on Friday.' Dr Bett, acting house surgeon, said that the child was admitted early on Friday evening, and was then in a state of deep collapse. Several of the lower right ribs had been broken* and driven into the lungs, while there were abdominal injuries. The child was so* collapsed that an operation could not be performed. She never rallied, and died about half-past six on Sunday evening, as the result of the injuries received. Michael P. Mackie, father of the child, said she was eleven years of age. On Friday he had driven the home and trap to a certain shop, and on alighting, the mare had immediately bolted in the direction of home. When ho got home, he was told of the accident. The child had been used to horses. Jessie Mackie, aged ton, said she had been playing with her elde-r sister when the horse and trap came in view, travelling fast, turning round the corner of tlie West Belt. Her sister had waved her pinafore in an* attempt to stop the runaway, but the mare’s forefeet had struck her on the back, knocking her down. The bottom step of the trap caught her side,- twisting her round, and the wheel crushed her. Some man lifted the wheel and picked her up. Joseph Mnris described the accident, and said that he had called out to the children to keep clear of the cart. He had lifted, the wheel and had driven the child to the Hospital. The jury returned a verdict of “ Accidentally killed.”
