Three thousand eight hundred and thirty-two houses were destroyed, and 2121 partially destroyed. Early on the morning of March 17 the inhabitants near Ivagi were startled by several slight shocks, followed by a severe one accompanied by subterranean explosions. The shocks continued at intervals of five to ten minutes all day. . They continued through the day following, and abated on March 19. They devastated an area of about thirty square iniles. The surface was much cracked in all directions, and water spurted up several feet. In some- parts the land subsided and lakes formed. In other places the exuding mud formed hillocks.
