Following King Edward’s example in 1876, the Prince of Wales desired a thanksgiving service to be held in Westminster Abbey for his safe return from his visit to India. King Edward, the Prince and Princess of Wales, all the Royalties in London, two hundred and fifty bluejackets from the Renown and Terrible, a draft of marine infantry, Lord Tweedmouth, First Lord of the Admiralty, and 'many .others were present. The Dean of Westminster, in his sermon, dwelt on India’s appreciation of her great Emperor’s beneficent rule and personal care for her welfare.
