CITY COUNCIL.

The City Council met last evening; present—the Mayor (Sir . John Hall), and <Joimcillors G. Payling, LL 11. Longlman. J. Orchard, IV. J. Neate, G. B. Chick, J. Hadfield, B P. Maphi.re, G. W. J. Parsons, C. Alison, H. J. Otlev., S. Hurst-Seager, T. Gapes and W. H." Cooper. The statement of . accounts showed that the general receipts since the previous meeting had been £1126 os Bd, and the expenditure £1915 Is 4d. Bd. MAYOR’S STATEMENT. ( The Mayor reported in regard to The work done since the previous meeting. Ho said that it would he necessary that evening to appoint delegates to attend the Municipal Conference -qn behalf of the Council. He felt, personally, that it would be an honour to attend the Conference on behalf of the Council, but that he. would b© unable to dp justice to the task entailed. _ He would prefer that Rome councillor should be selected. Tho Town Clerk had received one hundred -and seventyfive applications for registration under the Motor Registration Act, and Hie certificates were being prepared. THE EXHIBITION. , THE COUNCIL’S CONTRIBUTION A letter was read from the chairman of the committee set up in connection with the proposed Canterbury Court at the Exhibition, stating what had been done in'the matter. Councillor Cooper card that a mot-ion had been carried suggesting that tilelocal bodies should contribute towards the cent of the- Canterbury Court, on tho basis of their contribution to the Hospital Board. That .would not bo fair, because tho Gounod would have to contribute over, £4OO. Ho that a contribution of £-00 would be aT cJnncillor Gapes said that he felt that £2OO was a father sura 11 sum. Councillor Gapes seconded the motion, and said that largo sums would have to be spent by the Council in cleaning up the city. That was work which wo-fild have to be done. Councillor' Manbiro moved as an amendment, and Councillor Chick seoonded that the sum should bo £JuU. The Mayor Said that if there was any place in all Now Zealand that would benefit by the ExlMbitiou it was Christchurch, and tho Council shou d deal with the matter m a liberal mai - ner. He would rather see £3OO voted. The amendment was lost. Councillor Otley moved amendment, that a sum oi £3OO Should bo voted. No money, he said, had been, misspent on tho Exhibition, and. as ie Mayor had stated, Christchurch people would benefit from the Exhibition. Councillor Orchard seconded tho amendment. ..... Councillor Hadfield said that he was opposed to the larger sum, as tho Council would bo called upon for much increased expenditure,' especially in the direction of lighting the cuy. The By-laws Committee reported that a letter had been received from Mr M. Donnelly, on behalf of the licensed carriers at the Railway.btation, complaining that certain camcis v.ho attended there for the execution ot orders previously received, obtained an unfair proportion of the casual wora, and suggesting that Hie “stand provided for carriers who were waiting in compliance with orders, should be abolished. -The committee replied that itcould not see its way to comply with tho request,vas in its opinion that would not remove the cause oi complaint, if there were -any. The committee had considered M.essrs feoanes Bio.-,, application for permission. to cieot houses within thirty-three feet of tho centre of Salisbury* Grove, and could not- sec its way to* recommend tho Council to grant permission. The Finance Committee reported that it had considered tho -application from the Domain Board for -an increased contribution from the Council during tho current year, on account of fho holding of the International Exhibition in Hag-

ley Park, and recommended that an additional sum c-f £SO should bo placed c-n the estimates for the purpose. The report was adopted. . Ou the motion of Councillor Gapes it was decided that the Council should take into consideration the matter of regulating tho height of now buildings. It was decided, on. the motion of Councillor Hadfield, that the Drainage Board should be written to, asking when it intended to complete the concrete invert in Jackson’s Creek, Sydenham, from Colombo Street to Waltham Road, and to urge upon the Board the great necessity for the completion of the work.
