SPORTS GATHERINGS.

SOUTH CANTERBURY CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. ■ The second day’s competitions . of the ' South Canterbury Caledonian Society’s annual gathering were decided yesterday. The attendance on the first day of the Caledonian sports was about 7000, and the takings amounted to £258 9s, or £2O more than on the corresponding day last year. There .was a record entry of 101 in tho running and walling events, while; forty-seven entered for the cycling .events. Last year’s figures wore fifty-eight and thirty respectively. The total prize-money for both days was £450. There were no long-distance cycling events, the society hoping thereby to avoid funeral processions, and' the longest race wastwo miles. The absence of “ star ” riders n ilitated against the times, but made the finishes more even. The most successful riders were AVilliams and Lorhner. Tho society. this year was very severe on malpractice, and feur cycling competitors were fined. The walking contests unearthed a new competitor, Boyd, of Berwick. All the walking events were a gift to him, but he is likely to bo disqualified for an erroneous declaration of age. The list wrestling competition brought forward two new men, P. Curran and T. Guy. E. Eiordan showed himself too clever for his opponents in the loose styles. The weather was cold but fine. The Caledonian sports were well attended, the takings for the two days showing an advance of £59 011 last year. Tho weather turned cold and disagreeable in the afternoon.
