Owing to a heavy downpour in the morning, the interprovincial match, Canterbury versus Wellington, could nob be resumed until 2.30 p.m., and took only thirty-five minutes _tO finish, ■ the visitors winning by 35 runs. AUCKLAND v. OTAGO. [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, January 2. Tha cricket match, ' Auckland " T.. Otago was commenced on New Year’s , Day, in fine but dull weather. Otago , won the toss, and batted on an easy wicket, scoring 279 runs in three hour* and a quarter. The feature of the innings was the hatting of AVilson, an ex-Melbourne player, who put on 137. He played freely all round the wicket, and was never at any time in trouble to the bowling. Without taking risks, he played vigorous cricket. His score : included three fives and sixteen, fours, Graham played attractive cricket fol 44, the majority of his runs being mad* with a pretty late cut. Austin played a good deal on the defensive, but after lunch he opened out, and looked like wetting going when he was clean bowled by Hadden, Siedeberg threw his * wicket away, while Baker was out to a brilliant catch by Hay. None of th« others shaped like getting runs. Stemson was the only one of the Aucklanc bowlers who was troublesome. Auckland, Jgoing in, made an excellent start. Lusk played a capital i» nings, his runs being obtained by con rect yet vigorous cricket. He scored freely all round the wicket. Hemus 57 and Haddon 43 were still unconquered when stumps were drawn. The cricket match Poverty Bay ,v. Hawke’s Bay was concluded to-day, the home team winning by seven wickets. Poverty Bay, in the second innings, scored 173, Sharp 37, Sheridan 31 and Gibson 29, being top scorers. Hawke’s Bay secured the 39 runs required to ' win with the loss of three wickets, Hall V not out 25, getting most of the runs.
