THE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, January 1. The visiting players on Sunday were entertained by the Auckland Chess Club to a trip round the islands-in Auckland Harbour. The concluding stages of the seventh round were entered upon -ihis morning, and the games resulted as follows:—] Kummer v. James. —Kummer did not maintain his advantage and had to give up a bishop to stop queening. Seeing his position hopeless he resigned to James on tho thiriy-nfih move. freeman v. Mason.—On resuming Freeman lost a pawn and laier made an unsound sacrifice of rook for knight. He resigned on the fiftieth move. Miles v. Ke.ling.—The latter, a piece down, initiated a promising counter attack, but Miles, by effective combination, never gave him a spare - move, and Kelling resigned a moat interesting game on tho iorty-third move. The eighth round was finished this evening. ■ The results are as follows: Davies v. Edwards (Queen’s Pawn Opening).—This was the most vivacious game yet played in the congress. Davies won a piece at the eighth move, and Edwards never managed to 'extricate himself from his uncomfortable position, resigning on the sixty-first move. Kelling v. Jowitt (Scotch Game). —Jowiit made a slip early in the game, and had'to give up bishop, and then queen to avoid being mated. He resigned at the twentyjthird move. Kummer v. Grierson (Centro Game). —Tho game was evenly contested till Kummer allowed check white his knight was en prise to pawn. Rutherford v. Miles (Ruy Lopez).—Rutherford is gaining confidence and: strength. His victory over Miles was a really good performance. By splendid combination he won rook for bishop at the twenty-sixth move, and pressing- home his advantage was able to announce mate, in three at the thirtysecond move. James v. Mason (Vienna Opening).—A;( both players occupied a leading positim great interest was taken in their game. Both played with extreme caution, but towards the end of the middle game Mason won two pawns, arid James, seeing his position hopeless, resigned on the forty-second move.
