POLICE RAID IN CHRISTCHURCH.

ALLEGED “TOTE SHOPS.” TWELVE ARRESTS. The Christchurch detectives wer» very busy yesterday " when they made raids on three premises in Christchurch and arrested a large number of men on charges in connection with gaming and betting. _ All the members of the detective force, together with several members of the police force in plain clothes, took part in the raids. They were divided into three parties, and at three o clock made simultaneous raids on the premises of Barnett and Grant, Hereford Street; Livingstone, Hereford Lane ; and Ross, at the corner of Colombo Street and Cashel Street. In all the places, books and papers were taken possession of. Matthew Barnett, Peter Grant and Matthew Livingstone were arrested on a charge of keeping common gaining houses, and a similar charge has been made against J. Ross, who was' not present, but who will be served with a Maurice Hislop, J. Robinson, E. Diggs, 'V . Alexander, E. Bates, H. Hensley, C. Isaacs, B. O’Brien and F. Brown were arrested on Ross’s premises, and will be charged with having been found in a common gaming-house. All the accused were released on bail, and will be brought before the Court td-day.
