Taieri arrives from Timaru and Greymouth. The s.s. Taluno arrived from Dunedin .at 8.15 a m. yesterday. , Tbe s.s. Storm, with a cargo of timber from Akitio,. was berthed at the. Gladstone 'Pier at 5 a.m. yesterday. She is to leave on Wednesday evening for Timaru and Dunedin: The schooner Joseph Sims arrived at 8.30 i.m. yesterday with a load of timber from Westport, from which port she sailed last Tuesday!" jvendng. She had fine -weather and an im. eventful passage. - The ketch Dell Flower, a smart little vessel of S 8 tons register, arrived at Lyttelton with a cargo, of timber from Invercargill yesterday morning, being berthed alongside the schooner Huia at the Gladstone Pier at 7.30 a.m. She left Invercargill last Thursday Captain W. Harris, who is in command, states that his vessel attempted to leave Invercargill three weeks before she actually did so, but, while id anchor waiting for an opportunity to cross ‘ the bar, was driven ashore by a south-west gale and grounded on a mud flat. In order to get her off it was necessary, to take out a considerable part *f her cargo. The Bell Flower, which is awned by the Mitchelson Timber Company, of ■ Auckland, had an exciting experience nearly twelve months ago, when on a voyage from Mercury. Bay to Sydney: , She lost the blade , of her rudder,, in a gale, and, after a long delay, made her destination with an ingeniously contrived jury rudder, devised by Captain Harrisy-" The s.s. Talune left for Wellington and east coast ports at 6.10 p.m. yesterday, and the s.s. Rotomahana for Wellington at 8.45 p.m. ■ The New Zealand Shipping Company’s s.s. Wakanui is to leave Lytte.ton to-morrow evening for the Bluff and Port Chalmers. From the, latter port she is to go, to Wellington, Napier and Gisborne, returning to Welling: ton as her final port. ■ The New Zealand Shipping Company’s s.s. Tongariio, which arrived at Wellington from London yesterday, is expected- to arrive at Lyttelton on Friday next.- She has 1200 tons of cargo for this port, and will- go from here to Timaru, thence back here and then to Wellington. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s s.s. Whakatane, from West of England ports, is due at Lyttelton, via northern ports on Friday with about 1000 tons of cargo. She is to proceed from here to Dunedin to finish discharging, ' ' . There was quite a small fleet of coasting schooners at the Gladstone Pier yesterday, no fewer than seven of those 'vessels being berthed there. They were the Huia. Lily, Joseph Sims, Amelia Sims, Bell Flower, Morning Light and Haere. “The Australian people may regard the sending of the Powerful as the flagship of this station as a compliment.” Such was the emphatic'statement of an officer of the ship made ,to a Press representative at Perth. “Look at her size and sperd. She is a beautiful ship, and carries a larger complement, with the exception of the Terrible, than any vessel in the navy. "We left home with 1-01 men on board. At Malta 390 supernumeraries for the Mediterranean fleet left, so now our compliment is 903.” “The feeling here is that the F-uryalus would prove more serviceable.” “ The impression is not a correct cne. The Euryalus was sent Home, in accordance with the carrying out of the scheme which aims at securing what is termed homogeneity of squadrons, and the more the conditions governing the naval defence of the Empire are studied the more the necessity for retaining this homogeneity will. be realised. The Lords of the Admiralty are more Than making up any loss caused by recent withdrawals and changes on the Australian station by the class of cruisers they are sending out. The Encounter will replace the Wallaroo'and the Katccmbn, meeting those- vessels it Trincomalee. Here is a. change that adds greatly to the strength of the squadron. How many Wallaroos and Katoombas would be a natch for the Encounter?” The s.s.’’’Cygnet, which went to Akaroa on Saturday night with members of rowing dubs ‘‘and' others specially ' interested in the regatta, returned to Lyttelton at 8 V--m. yesterday, after a very good run of exactly four team-
