WAIAU DISTRICT SETTLERS' ASSOCIATION.

The monthly meeting of the Waiau District Settlers’ Association was held, on December 16, Mr L. Grant, vicepresident, iu the chair. It was resolved to write to tbe Government expressing surprise at its refusal of tho offer of an Amuri syndicate to construct the Culverden-Waiau section of the north line of railway, as it was considered that the line, when made, would return a rat© of interest that would compare favourably with any other line in the province; and, further, the settlers were of opinion that the lino should be pushed on as scon as possible. Mr YV. T. Rutherford’s resignation of the position of secretary was accepted with regret. The annual meeting of subscribers to the medical fund was then held, Mr Grant presiding. The report and bal-ance-sheet for the year showed that the receipts had been £IOB 2s and the expenditure £BO 19s, leaving a balance to carry forward of £27 3s. Th© secretary reported that the amount of £9 10s Gd of the guaranteed subscriptions remained unpaid. The report and bal-ance-sheet were adopted. It was resolved that the secretary should bo instructed to write to those in arrears with their subscriptions, requesting payment. Tho rate of subscription for the current year was fixed at 25s for married men and 12s 6d for single men, payable in advance. Tbe secretary was -instrncted to write to all householders, giving information with regard to the benefits derived by subscribing to- the medical fund. It was decided to write to Mr A. W. Rutherford, M.H.R., for information regarding the renewal of the Government subsidy.
