.CHRISTCHURCH CYCLING AND MOTOR CLUE’S WHEEL RACE MEETING. The Christchurch Cycling and Motor Club held its New Zealand 'Wheel 'Race Meeting at Lancaster Park .yesterday under most favourable conditions, the weather being .nlmoet perfect. There were about GOOD spectators present, the sum taken at tbs gates being £221 2s lid. l The Premier and his party, and Sir Joseph Ward, tho Hou C. H. Mills, the Hon J. Carroll and the Hon T. Y. Duncan wore among those present, and titter the "Wheel Race the Premier decorated tho winner with the championship blue riband. Doth Mr -Sodden and tho winner were heartily cheered.' Tho racing was very interesting throughout, and the meeting was one of the most successful that has been held in Christchurch. The- management was very good, the- events being got off smartly to time, and the programme was gone through without a hitch of any kind. The chief interest of the spectators was centred in tho New Zealand Wheel Race, a handicap of two miles, in which many well-known riders competed. In this event and in. the Anniversary Handicap and the- Canterbury Stakes, the club adopted the plan of giving special prizes to the winners of heats. Two guineas was the prize for each heat of the "Wheel Race, and half a guinea for each heat in the other ©vents, and tho riders made .groat efforts to secure the first places, ‘with the result that the finishes were good. The "Wheel Raceprovided a great contest, and the winner, M. Randrup, accomplished a very fine performance. G. Sutherland, who. was on the scratch mark with Randrup, also rode well, and among the “longmarkers” R. Rodgers and A. Bonis . performed creditably. A special prize.; of two guineas for “ the most meritorious performance throughout tho race ” was awarded to C. E. Burton (25yds), who rode gamely in both boat and final. It was largely due to his unselfish pacing that tho “ backmarkers” wore able to figure so largely as they did in the x-ace. The Exhibition Plate, 'an invitation scratch race of a mile, was a good race. Two of the competitors' were employed as pacere, taking alternate half-laps, and a time limit of 2min 15sec was fixed for the race. Thors was no loafing, and the finish was a fine struggle between Sutherland and Randrup, tho latter winning a, race which he rode with great- judgment. Tho most successful rider in other -events was C. F. Baker, who won the Anniversary Handicap and the Canterbury Stakes in good style. He also rod© well in the Wheel Race, showing a great turn of speed at the finish of his heat. There was -only one race on the programme for amateurs, a two-miles handicap, which provided a popular win for H. Bowley. The following were the officials:— Referee, Mr W. E.
