Drunkenness. — A first offender was fined 5s and costs.

Assault. — John Joseph Dalton (Mr M’Connol) pleaded guilty to a charge of having assaulted nanet Oampbcn at Feudalton on December 12. It appeared that the 'assault was rather trivial, and the accused was convicted and ordered to find two sureties of £25 each to keep tho peace for three months.

False Pretences. —Martha Tainui, who was credited wit a four aliases, was charged that, on December 8, with intent to defraud, she had obtained goods-and money to the-amount of £2 13s 6d from Macdonald Bros, by falsely pretending that she was the owner of land at Papanui. She was also charged with having obtained- £6 from Kate Fletcher by a similar false pretence. She pleaded not guilty. Macdonald stated that- accused had conic to his shop and obtained the goods ,on the representation that she had property in Papanui Road, valued at £38,000. She had given him and his brother an invitation to visit her. The accused flatly contradicted this. On the second charge, Mrs Fletcher stated that accused came to her house to take lodgings, stating that her name was M’Donald, and that she and her husband had just arrived from Sydney, bringing some racehorses. She said that her husband had gone* to Kaiapoi, to talk, over a land transaction. She had a cheque for £250 on an Australian Bank, and could not get the money, so die borrowed £6. Soon afterwards, she left the house, taking all her belongings in a parcel. The accused was convicted and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to run consecutively.
