SWIMMING.

CANTERBURY CENTRE. The Canterbury Centro of th© New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association met last evening; present—Messrs A. Calvert (chairman), J. M, Hamilton, R. O’Donnell, H. Williams, H. H. Wauchop, W. Strange, W. Smith, E. Eldridge, 0. Kent, F. S. Hall. P. Rundle, E. Hulbert, V. Drake, C. Bryant, S. Fitch, F. Reid, A. Brown and W. Johnson (honorary secretary). The programmes for the Richmond Club’s carnival, to be held on February 3, th© Lyttelton Club’s carnival, to bo held on January 1, and th© Spreydon Club’s carnival, on January 13, were approved. A letter was received from th© Weilington Centro, stating that it would support any movement of the Association to hand over its human© branch to the Royal Human© Society. If the} Association did not wish to control the branch at Christchurch, it should be transferred to the Dunedin Centre. A letter was Received from the Lancaster Park Club, stating that it had decided to relinquish its leas© of the Lancaster Park bath, owing to its unsatisfactory state. The club would be virtually dissolved, and would be unable to remain affiliated to the Centre. Th© letter was received, and the Centre accepted th© withdrawal of the club with regret. Mr G. Harris, president of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, wrote in reference to the proposals made by him for the conduct of the humane branch. He stated that a misapprehension had arisen in regard to his proposals. He wished to avoid any friction between the humane branch and th© Royal Human© Society, and, therefore, suggested for the consideration of th© human© branch th© question of issuing medals and certificates for life-saving. The Council, did not intend to usurp the functions of th© humane branch, nor to give the management to the Royal Humane Society. The letter was received, and the president and secretary were requested to reply, thanking Mr Harris.
