THE EXHIBITION.

Monday is to be marked by the first ©facial ceremony in connection with, tb© Exhibition. Probably only a small percentage of the population of Christchurch has thought'a visit to Hagley Park worth the expenditure of an idle hour, and yet there is at present no more interesting spot in the neighbourhood of the city. It is possible now to obtain an idea of the magnitude of the work in hand. The river-banks have been transformed, and the football grounds are the scene of busy operations. Building and levelling are in progress everywhere, and a line of railway has been laid right across the Park. Of course, there will be a special attraction on Monday when the foundation-stone of the Exhibition will be laid by the Premier. The Is in no sense a political one, but this is to be the Premier’s “ first public appearance ” after the elections, and w© shall be surprised if somewhere in' the proceedings there does not occur an excuse for a reference to the remarkable Liberal victory at the polls. Mr Seddon, we understand, is to be accompanied by several of his colleagues, including Sir Joseph Ward and the Bon James Carroll, the Government rightly considering that the undertaking is one of vast importance in the modern history of the colony. The public do not in general appreciate the extent of the preparations inat have already' been made. The weekly official reports merely record the business of the committees in cold language, and the ordinary _reader does not trouble to add the business' of one week to that of the previous week. But the citizens will have an opportunity of learning the position.at Monday’s ceremony. We hope that- they will be present in large numbers to assist at the official beginning pf the works, and fco wish good luck to the great undertaking in which they are all so closely interested.
