' The Union Steamship Company’s s.s.Monowai, from Sydney, via Wellington, entered within the moles at 6 a.m. yesterday. . She left Sydney on Saturday last, and arrived’ at Wellington at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. ’ Smooth seas, with heavy rain squalls, hazy, overcast weather and variable winds pre- ■ vailed throughout the passage across the Tasman Sea. The steamer left Wellington for here at 4.15 p m. on Thursday. Yesterday the 5.9. Devon arrived from Dunedin at 6 a,m., the s.s. Rotomahana from Wellington at 8.20 a.m., the s.s. Baden-Powell from Wellington at 10.45 a.m. ■ The schooner Rings, which left‘Lyttelton on Friday last, arrived at Havelock on Thursday night. She had been greatly hindered by adverse winds. ' The Union Steamship Company’s new turbine steamer Maheno, from Melbourne, via the south, arrived at 4.30 a.m. yesterday. The report of the passage states that the Maheno left Melbourne at 7.40 p.m. on Wednesday, December 6, cleared the Heads at midnight, passed Swan Island at 11,30 a.m. • on Thursday, December 7, rounded Tasman Island at 10.40 the same night, and arrived in Hobart at 2 a.m. on Friday, December 8. She left Hobart again at 4.20 p.m. on Friday, had Tasman Island abeam at-6.30 the sane night, sighted Puysegur Point at 10.35 p m. on Sunday last, and arrived o2 the Bluff at 4 a.m. on Monday, mooring at seven the same morning. Making allowance for th=! difference in time . between Tasmania ltd How Zealand, the Maheno made the run irom Hobart to the Bluff in the smart time of 58 hours. She left the Bluff at 7.30 on Monday evening, and arrived in Dunedin on Tuesday morning. After leaving Melbourne she experienced fine weather, with light iou'h-easterly wind and swell, which held till arrival at Hobart; from thence fine weather, with light south and north-easterly wind and smooth seas. The steamer left Port Chalmers for Lyttelton at 5.25 p.m. on Thursday. She made the run from Otago Heads to Lyttelton Heads in lOhr smin, or ■b average speed of nearly 18 knots. ‘

The s.s. Devon left at 4.13 p.m. yesterday for Wellington. After shipping a quantity of cargo for West of England ports she is to go from Wellington to Sydney and thence Home via Buenos Ayres. The schooner Lily came off the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s slip yesterday morning. Her place on the slip was taken in the afternoon by the s.s. John Anderson, which went on ,to be cleaned and painted. The steamer is to come off to-day,' The s.s. Bjidon-Powell left for Akflroa via the Bays at 3.5 p.m. yesterday. The s.s. Adansi, which brought a cargo of E‘ trrah timber from Bunbury to Dunedin and yitelton, left yesterday evening under orders to proceed to Sydney. What her movements wiL be alter reaching that port is not known, here. It is understood that another steamer will come to Lyttelton shortly with a second load of timber from Bunbury. The s.s. Brisbane left for Kaipara at 5.55 last evening, the s.s. Canopus for Westport at 6.15, the s.s. Adansi for Sydney at 9.56 p.m., and the barque Arthur from the stream for Kaipara at 7 p.m. The Cygnet arrived, from Cheviot and Kaikoura at 9.33 last evening. The Rotomahana left for Wellington at 6.15 last evening, and, the Mhheno for the same port at 7.45. v There was considerable speculation in the’ port last night as to whether the latter boat would succeed in catching the Rotomahana and in breaking the record of lOhr 17min at present hold by the Moeraki for the trip to Wellington.
