Th© report of th© Select Committee on tbe charges brought by the Rev Woolls Rutledge of religious preference in th© public service, declares th© statement to be without foundation, PROTECTION. MELBOURNE, October 25. A deputation representing the Victorian Chamber of Manufacturers waited on tho Minister of Customs end urged an alteration of th© tariff in the direction of farther protection. They declared that a number of industries were languishing owing to the small protection afforded. Sir William Lyno promised consideration of the views. The United States had the most scientific tariff in tho world. If ho ever came to deal with the tariff, he would take the American ideal.
