THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.

[Per Press Association.] WHANG AREI, October 23. A fourth candidate, Mr Hugh ShortJand, is anuounced for Marsdeii. Mr Mander has bean selected as the Farmers’ Union candidate. ~ A largely attended meeting of Mr C. M. Gray’s committee was held last evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Montreal Street north. Councillor G. Payling was elected chairman of the General Committee, and sub-committees were formed for the purpose of canvassing the whole of the electorate. It was decided that Mr C. M. Gray should deliver his next address at St Luke’s Schoolroom, and that a meeting of lady supporters should be held in the. Art Gallery at an early date. Satisfactory reports were handed in from all parts of the district, showing that the candidate was making substantial progress throughout the electorate. After tranEacting a large amount of routine bmnees the committee adjourned till November 3. Mr T. H. Gaveihili will address the electors in St Barnabas’ School, Penr daiton, at eight o’clock this evening. Mr C. L. Russell, who is a candidate for the Lyttelton seat, will his first address at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Lyttelton, at eight o’clock this evening. Mr H. Shaw will address the,electors of Ellesmere at Little River this ©vening. A meeting of Mr W. W. Collins’s friends and supporters will be held in the Richmond School at eight o’clock this evening. Mr B. Moore, who is a candidate for Kaiapoi, will speak in the Oddfellows’ Hall at Wcodend ..this evening. Mr J. Ivcss will address the electors of Sslwyn at the Lauriston Sc’hoolhouso this evening. Mr James Thorn, the Political Labour League’s ca ndidate for Christchurch South, will deliver an address in the Waltham Schoolroom at eight o’clock to-morrow evening. Mr J. A. Efford, who will contest the Riooarbon seat on behalf of the Political Labour League, will give an address in the Town Hall, Belfast, at eight o’clock on Friday evening. Mr Cook, the Socialist candidate for Christchurch East, is a native of Yorkshire, and is about thirty years of age. Ho is a tailor by trade, and is working at his calling in Christchurch. He is a member of the International Sodialist Party, a world-wide organisation, which stands for collective ownership of the means of production and distribution, and for giving the worker the full social product of his labour.^ An open-air meeting was held at tno C a versham com or, under the auspices of the Christchurch branch of the International Socialist Party, last evening. There were several speakers, among them being Mr F. Cook, who is the Party’s nominee for Christchurch East, and Mr Brooks, _ a member of the Blackburne Corporation, England. The remarks of the speakers were of a socialistic nature throughout, but they had a special application in regard to the coming contest. Mr Cook addressed himself particularly to the workers, who, ho said, must think for themselves, instead of electing men to think for them. Mr J. R. Brunt, - a candidate for Avon, will open his campaign at the Linwood Hall, corner Gloucester Street and Rolleston Street, on Thureday evening. i Councillor H. J. Otley will preside.
