Lanessan created a sensation by declaring that the fortresses; on the eastern frontier of France were unable to resist the 160 powerful guns Germany possesses, and howitzers throwing projectiles weighing forty kilogrammes and mortars 145 kilogrammes, filled with powerful explosives. He declares that France possesses no similar artillery.
