CONDENSED CORRESPONDENCE.

R. D. condemns the Premier’s attitude in regard to the Pahiatua byeelection, and makes special reference to the distribution in Pahiatua of copies of Mr Sadden’s Wellington speech, which “ did not contain a single word of what ho had said on the leasehold or land question.” _ J “Bagpipes” asks why the evidence, or facts, in the recent racing scandal was not published, and says: “ Surely tho public afe entitled to some consideration. Can there be anything behind the scenes that will not bear the light of day? I witnessed one race at the last meeting of tho Christchurch Racing Club, and, if a person can believe his own eyes, there seemed to be something radically wrong with some of the horses competing in the Welter.” “ Pro Bono Publico ” comments on the opposition expressed by Mr Charles Reid, at a recent meeting of the Ashburton High School Board, to the suggestion to increase the headmaster’s salary. “I do not know,” he says, “ what increase of salary the Board proposed to offer Mr Tennant’s successor, but I know that the salary paid to Sir Tennant was quite inadequate. Under Mr Tennant’s charge the Ashburton High School has risen to be one of tho best of its class in the colony. . . . Imagine a member of a High School Board stating that a ‘ minister of tho Gospel ’ —a third-rate one, I presume—holds a more responsible position than that of a first-class high school master! No wonder that many good men and women are abandoning the teaching profession, so seriously hampered by the presence of illiterate, ungenerous, and non-progressive men on School Boards and School Committees. . . . Mr licit! can have little knowledge of the great expense, hard work, and frequent hardships experienced during the long academical training of good teachers.”
