[Per Press Association.] WAIROA, April 1. Mr C. A. Olsen, acting-postmaster. was taken suddenly ill last night, and lies in a precarious condition. ACCIDENT TO A JOCKEY. A serious accident occurred on Saturday afternoon to a jockey named J. M'Guire, who was riding Taxpayer in' the Flying Handicap at the Akaroa County Racing Club's fleeting, on the Plumpton Racecourse. Early in' the race Taxpayer fell, and, as the spectators noticed that M'Guire did not rise from the ground, Dr Thacker speedily proceeded to the spot, and the unfortunate rider was carried to the grandstand enclosure, where an examination by Dr Thacker ascertained that M'Guire's right collar-bone had been very badly fractured, while he had sustained severe concussion of the brain. The injured lad was immediately sent to the. Christchurch Hospital. At an early hour this morning he had not recovered consciousness. A boy named John Madden, six years of age, fell from a tree on Satinday afternoon, and sustained concussion of the brain. He was taken to the Christchurch Hospital. A German* named Otto Von Voger was admitted to the Hospital, suffering from the effects of a poisonous preparation, which he had mistaken for medicine. About noon yesterday, when the s.s. John. Anderson was out on a fishing excursion, an accident happened. When the anchor was dropped the vessel gave a sudden lurch, and one of the passengers, an elderly man, residing in Antigua Street, was. thrown down, and fell with his head , between two iron bitts. 'He received two. scalp wounds, one on each, side of the head. The steamer at once, put back, and the patient was taken to Dr Newell's surgery, where his wounds were dressed. In the evening ho was removed to the Christchurch Hospital.
