Mr M'Ciillum, chief engineer of the s.s. Monowai, remained behind in Dunedin. Mr Ronalds, the second engineer, is acting in his place. On Saturday morning 650 sheep, sent from Masterton, were landed at Lytteiton from the Mararoa. The Victoria, from Wellington, landed, 3G5, making a total of 16,443 for Uio. week, about 3000 le:i3 than "the number brought in during the previous week. Yesterday morning the steamer Storm, from Wanganui, brought 1122 sheep to Lytteiton. The Dunedin Chamber of Commerce haa sent a letter to the Otugo Harbour Board, complaining of a fa!ling-ofi in the trade of the port, and stating that in the interest of the port and of all concerned, the Harbour Board should be invited to give the whole subject its gravest consideration, and should be requested, il; it finds it practicable, to amend its regtilations and adjust its charges and dues in the following directions:—(a) To admit vessels of 3000 tens or more net register at half the present schedule rates; (b) to abolish transhipment due; (c) to provide for a refund of inward due (or the greater j part of them) when goods which paid such dues are reshipped coastwise. The steamer Jane Douglas, well known at I Lytteiton, is to undergo an overhaul at Nelson. The New Zealand Shipping Company's s.s. j Papatoa, which left London for Wellington on March 5, arrived at Cape Town on Tuesday last. v Tho Government steamer Hinemoa, which returned to Wellington from the West- Coast on Saturday is to sail to-night on a visit to tho whole of tho Cook Stra.s; lighthouses. After that she will go round the southern lighthouses. Antwerp stands third in the list of tho world's ports as regards total tonnage entered and e'eared, London bring first and New York second. A sea-chest, belonging to Herbert, the second mate of tho wrecked barque Acacia, was discovered, off Port Davoy, Tasmania, bearing a painting on the lid, with the Britjrholmo, under full sail, Herbert having once been a seaman on that vessel, which was wrecked a few miles away from where the Acacia met with disaster. . Experiments recently made by the British Admiralty (says the " Steamship") have shewn that coal submerged in Portsmouth Harbour last year burns with greater heat than coal kept on land under a tarpaulin. Further experiments are to bs made. The " Otago Daily Times" states that the work of installing the electric light at the export pier, Port Chalmers, has been completed, together with those of the railway station buildings and platform, which were lit on Thursday night, and worked very satisfactorily. In reference to the purchase of the hull and machinery of the wrecked R.M.S. Orizaba by Messrs Charles Moore and Co., of Perth, tho Perth " Morning Herald" of March 7 says:—"lnquiries made yesterday showed that the purchasers of the vessel were not acting in the dark when they secured thevessel for £3750. They were guided by the result of a careful examination of the hull, which was made by their own diver, and the evidence of experts as to the chances of refloating the steamer. It is stated they are fully convinced they will be able to raise the vessel, and, after patching her up temporarily, tow her into Fremantle Harbour. The examination made by tho diver showed, it is stated, that the hull is not damaged to half the extent that many people supposed it was, and there is some reason to believe that tho watertight compartments of the vessel are prr.ctically uninjured. The cargo already removed from the vessel's holds is said to have lightened her to such an extent that she is now 2£ft higher out of the water.. than she was, before salving onerations started. Further, the No. 1. hold is now only half full of water, and the fact that the No 2 hold was two hours in filling is said to show that the damage is confined to the engine-room." The '' New Zealand Times" states that whilst the schooner Jonsie Niccol was about to be moved from Jervois Quay to tho stream on Thursday afternoon, preparatory to sailing for Koipara. the strong north-westerly wind carried the vessel arainst the wharf and smashed her stern railing. The schooner was n-iterwards berthed at No. 6. Glasgow Wharf, for repairs. She will return from Ksipara with a carsro of timber. It is stated that the Union Company's new stea-rner Arahura will Ms SSOft '.ong, 44ft broad and 28ft fi'in deep. On deck there will be accommodation for ninety sa'oon and forty second saloon passergers. She is to have a speed of 12$ knots at sea on a draught of 12ft. The total capacity on a draurht of 21ft will be 3600 tons, including bunker coal. Mr Murray, late second engineer of the s.s. Waipori (says the Wellington "Post"), has been transferred to Melbourne, and is now chief engineer of the Flora, acting in place of Mr Morton, who haß gone to England on holidav leave.
