"THE CLARION."

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I desire to draw attention to the unfair, unjust and untruthful manner in which my namo is connected with Mr Lewis's in the closing sentences of your article this clay regarding " The Clarion." No ono of your correspondents has ever in any way imputed to me responsibility for or identity with Mr Lewis's charges of pruriency against the paper. That dishonourable course has been left to yourself, and you have evidently started to " th;ow mud " at this stage of the con(roversy in the vain hope that some of it vill stick till after next November. i have never expressed an opinion regarding Mr Lewis's charges. I fully ' staled at the Board meeting my reasons for moving the exclusion of "The Clarion." Subsequently, in self dofence, I elaborated my arguments at length in your columns, and after .that letter you found it convenient ''on more than one occasion) to explain that you did not agree with Mr Blatchford. I now challenge you to quote one word I have either written or said which justifies you in identifying me in any '.ray with Mr Lewis's charges against " The Clarion." Well knowing that your references to me on this day are * deliberate and wilful attempt to slander me, and made without the slightest justification, I demand a retractation of ! the same. Failing your either sjrpportjjng your charges or, in the alternative, •viihdrawing them, I leave the public to decide as to your conduct.—l am, etc., G. W. RUSSELL. 8 April 1, 1905.
