BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

The Canterbury College Board of Governors met yesterday afternoon; present —Mr A. E. G. Rhodes (cha innan), Bishop Julius, Bishop Grimes, Dean Harper, Dr Erwin, and Messrs 0. Opie, C. 0. Corfe, J. C. Adams, G. W. Russell, W. H. Montgomery, T. W. Adams, T. Hughes, H. J. Beswick and T. S. Foster.

Mr E. Lelievro was appointed to represent the Board on the Akaroa High School Board, Mr J. Johnston on the Rangiora, Board, and Mr J, Sinclair on the Waimate Board.

The annual report of the Chairman was planed on the table. Mr Montgomery urged that there should . be more information in regard to the accounts of the various institutions and the position of the College ‘funds. It was impossible to ascertain from the statement the financial position of the Boys’ High School. Next year the accounts should be set forth in an explanatory form. There was no annual report in regard to tho reserves or the main positlom of the accounts. ■ The statements were merely a mass of figures. The Chairman said that he had received, •a letter from Professor Blunt stating that he bad been offered, but had not accepted,, another appointment. The letter was read and considered in committee, and on resuming, the Chairman reported that it had been received. A letter was received from Mr E. Thompson resigning the position of master of drawing. and woodwork at the Boys’ High • ‘School. The, matter was referred to the College Committee with power to advertise for applications. ' The Museum and Library Committee mad* the . following recommendations, among others, referred to elsewhere, in regard to the. Public Library,:—That a, vote of thanks should' be accorded Miss Dixon for eight drawings presented to the School of Art; that the sum of £5 should he granted far the purchase of hooks for the School of Art. Library ; that an extra scholarship should' be grunted this year at the School of Art, to girls from' primary schools, ,ns two girls were equal for the sixth, scholarship. The committee reported having reappointed Mr E. H. C. Kidder, for the current session, as part time assistant instructor in mechanical drawing at'the School of Engineering, and Mr R. A. Campbell, for the current ajsnon, as student assistant at the School of Engineering, at £4O for the session. It hud no power to grant assistance to the. WesHmrt Athenreum towards replacing the library and free reading-room destroyed by fire, The report was adopted. • The College and Finance and Estates Joint Committees reported that it had had a, long interview with -the Secretary for Education oil tile, proposals of the Government with respect to, providing free places in High Schools, and had appointed a subcommittee to bring up a report on the questinn> , , The report was .adopted. The College Committee recommended that Miss F. M" Parker should be appointed temporary assistant teacher at the Girls’ Hindi School, to fill the vacancy caused by Mbs Gresson’s leave of absence-; if satisfactorv. the appointment to be confirmed for ■ the period of Miss Gresson’s absence, /and the salary to he at the rate of £llO per nnmini. The committee also recommended that the salary of Mr G. R. Marriner. biological laboratory assistant, should be increased to £BS per annum, as from Jan. !• that a."certificated teacher of drawing for the ■ Girl s ’. High School, either male or female, should he advertised for. at a salary at the rate, of £3O per annum, the duties to commence next term.
