ATHLETIC.

THE PIONEER CLUB’S SPORTS. : The Pioneer Amateur Bicycle and Athletic Club’s A nm,a l Spring Meeting was held on Saturday afternoon, in fine weather, Ihe atiendan'co of the public was amah, cut °thcrwiae the meeting was very successful. -The number-of competitors was rather larger than isual,- the fields in the distance events being especially good. Taken all through, the pertonnanccs recorded were distinctly good, the best being C. S. Harper’s high jump of 3ft 73in, which heat the standard by gin. There was one notable revival on the programme, ► that ol comnetition for the Secondary Schools Challenge Cup, which for several years was hot offered, owing to lack of entries. The competitors were teams from Christ s College and Ashburton High School, and, though the former won rather easily, their opponents were not disgraced. The latter, and Hr David Thomas, who was the means of their rhakine- the trip, deserve great credit for their pluckiness. The most pleasing feature of the meeting was the absence of those intervals that have come to be associated in the public Clind with the idea of an athletic sports gathering.' The officials worked strenuously pid successfully -to get l the events off to time. The tVoolston Band was in attendance, and (rftefnoon tea was provided.
