AN AWKWARD PREDICAMENT
INEBRIATE’S NARROW ESCAPE. [Per Press Association.] WANGANUI, Dec. 13,
An old man had a narrow escape of being burned to death yesterday. While in a state of intoxication he went to sleep, under some trees in Queen’s Avenue. Some grans caught fire from the ashes from his pipe, and when he was awakened by the flames his clothes were in a blaze. He made for a wire fence close by, but fell into a ditch in which a quantity of dry leaves had accumulated and were burning fiercely. Scrambling out, he attempted to get through the wires, but failed, and would have been burned to death had not a resident observed his predicament and gone to his assistance. He was taken to the hospital.
