THE WRECK OF THE ELINGAMITE.

THE CONDITION OF THE BOATS. United Press Association—By Eicct-iio Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, Dec. 13. At a meeting of the MariAe Board a letter’ was received from the Secretary to the New Zealand Marine Department, asking whether certain evidence given at the Elingamite inquiry, to the effect that Captain Deary, the Board’s surveyor, had allowed the steamer to leave the port without making sure that the boats were provided with compasses, was true. Captain Deary states that, although his note-book showed no detailed account of his last inspection, he was perfectly certain that each of the four lifeboats contained the articles insisted on by the regulations. If it had not been so he would never have given the necessary certificate.
