Owing to the prevalence of scarlet fever and German measles some of the city and suburban schools have closed down, and others are breaking up for the Christmas vacation earlier than usual. Mr T. Brydone, superintendent for the New Zealand and Australian Laud Company, who returned to Dunedhi yesterday after a visit to the Old Country, replied to. a. "Star" reporter who asked as to how he found- (lie New Zealand meat trade at Home : " The price is the main thing, and that has been fairly satisfactory. Tliere have been no recent alterations in our market arrangements. The Argentine is still our formidable competitor. Our meat is preferable to Argentine meat in regard to quality and price. As a matter of fact, however, the pressure- from the Argentine in England has beeu somewhat relieved of late owing to that country making special efforts to capture the South African trade." It is rumoured that so far as the recount has gone, prohibition has been carried at Chalmers by seven votes.
