The Presbyterian Assembly discussed the New Hebrides- speeches. Members strongly opposed the French efforts to gain control of the islands. The Rev J. Stewart said that nothing would solve the problem but the hoisting of the Australian flag. The islands, geographically, belonged to Australia, and, politically, were essential to it as a ring of outer defences for the Commonwealth. /
